Creating Healthier, Fire-Resilient Forests
Our forest thinning services focus on fuels reduction and forest stand improvement to promote healthier, more resilient ecosystems across Nevada City, Grass Valley, and greater Nevada County. Using selective, hand-crew methods, we reduce hazardous vegetation while preserving the integrity and beauty of your land.

Selective Thinning with a Light Touch
Our experienced hand crew employs a “light touch” approach using chainsaws and small, controlled burn piles. We target ladder fuels, overcrowded understory vegetation, and trees competing for light and resources with healthy overstory specimens.

Every thinning decision is made with an eye toward species diversity, forest health, and ecological balance. Our crews know the local vegetation intimately and work carefully to restore natural forest structure without over-disturbing the landscape.

Cut, Pile, and Burn Techniques
We use cut, pile, and burn methods tailored to the season and the broader stewardship plan for your property.
-
May–October:
Crews create burn piles for winter ignition or as preparation for upcoming prescribed burns. -
November–April:
During the open burning season, we often cut and burn in place, using slash as feeder piles to safely and efficiently consume fuels during the same season as thinning.
These techniques reduce dead and downed fuels, improve forest health, and create safer conditions for future prescribed fire or targeted grazing.

Integrated Land Stewardship

Forest thinning can be performed as a standalone service or integrated with other land stewardship practices.

Our crew often conducts thinning in preparation for prescribed burns, treating the perimeter of the burn unit and — when the budget and management goals allow — thinning the full burn area to ensure optimal results.
By combining forest thinning with prescribed fire or targeted grazing, we create a comprehensive, long-term fuel management strategy that supports both ecological health and community safety.
